What To Wear for Your Next Television Interview

You recently accepted a television interview request and want to put your best foot forward. Video is visual, so what you wear and how you look, matters. Additionally, your digital footprint follows you for a long time. You want to bring your full, authentic self to the interview, and you also want to make a lasting impression. So, what should you wear?

Here are 10 tips on what you should wear to present your best self.

Do
  • Wear a little makeup (regardless of your gender) so your face has a nice, matte finish. Camera lights are hot and may cause you to sweat. Makeup can help (as you aren’t wearing a ton of it).
  • Wear something that reflects your brand and personality. Just ensure that what you select does not distract from your words.
  • Be mindful that you will likely wear a lapel microphone. Therefore, wear something which the producers can attach the microphone.
  • Be mindful that large, dangly earrings and big necklaces can not only distract from your interview but also brush up against the microphone.
  • Wear colors that accentuate your skin tone, or colors that compliment you. Consider solid, bold colors.
  • Be aware of the fit of the clothes. Sleeves should come to the wrist or a little above.
Avoid
  • Avoid clothes that might distract from your words and your message. You want people to listen to what you say, not get sidetracked by your appearance.
  • If you’re interview is outside, avoid clothes that will blow excessively in the wind. Be sure that your hair is also styled so it will not blow in your face or on the microphone.
  • Be mindful of repeating patterns as those could be distracting on camera. Patterns can appear to move or vibrate on television.
  • If possible, remove your glasses before the interview. The glare of glasses can cause a reflection if the camera catches them at the right angle.
